ARE YOU SERIOUS ABOUT THE ARTS?
The Individual Arts Assessment Pathway (IAAP) is a graduation pathway in which students complete a three-unit sequence in fine arts that demonstrates growth over time through a collection of creative works aligned with New York State Learning Standards.
Most students graduating from Mexico High school receive a Regents Diploma by earning at least 22 credits and passing Regents Examinations in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. New York State also requires a ‘’pathway,” and again most students at Mexico satisfy this by taking a fifth Regents Exam in either ELA or Social Studies, resulting in a “Humanities” Pathway.
This year Mexico Academy & Central Schools was approved by NYSED to offer the Individual Arts Assessment Pathway. To achieve this Pathway, students must still earn at least 22 credits, but rather than taking a fifth Regents Exam in ELA or Social Studies students substitute a portfolio-based assessment comprised of these creative works, which are collected over the course of three or more years. The resultant Regents Diploma carrying the same weight as any other NYSED approved Diploma/Pathway combination. Students wishing to fulfill the requirements for a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation may still do so while pursuing this pathway.
